Multichannel TV Sound, commonly known as MTS, is a method for encoding three additional channels into an analog bus in NTSC format. It was developed by Broadcast Television Systems Committee, an industry group, sometimes known as BTSC as a result.
MTS worked by adding additional signals into blank portions of the TV signal. MTS allowed up to four audio channels. Usually two channels were broadcast to produce the left and right stereo channels. A second Aud plug-in (SAP) can be used to broadcast other languages or a completely different sound like weather alerts that the user can access, usually via a button on the remote control. The fourth channel, PRO, was only used by broadcasters.
